He followed his father's prowess in surfing and nearly became an inspiration just as a teen, but he was involved in an accident that cost him a few teeth and fifteen stitches on his forehead. This marked the end of his surfing career, and a beginning of a prolific music career. His song "Drink the Water" was inspired by the accident he had while surfing.
