Sanjaya Joseph Malakar was born on September 10, 1989 in Capitol Hill, Seattle, Washington. During his college days, Sanjaya passed the General Educational Developmental Test, which allowed him to leave school early so that he could concentrate on his musical career. Sanjaya also participated in the American Idol. Soon after his elimination from the show, the ratings dropped 9% and so, on the final, he performed with the top 6 males of the show. He was the most talked about contestant in Season 6. An official fan page was created after his elimination. Judges were also surprised to see his huge fan followers but the producers knew that he stood no chance to win the show.

Sanjaya’s father, Vasudeva Malakar, is a Bengali Indian who immigrated to the USA. His mother, Jillian Recchi Blyth, was an Italian American. His father came out of the closet declaring that he is a homosexual. His parents eventually filed for divorce when he was three years old. At the time of the divorce, Sanjaya’s mother and her children had no money. His mother remarried again, but his stepdad died soon afterwards.

Even though Sanjaya has spent most of his growing years in Seattle, he has also lived in Hawaii and California. He has performed at the Hawaii Children’s Theatre Group. For 3 years he was with the Gospel Choir.
