Best came from the city of Madras which was a part of British India. Best's mother, Mona Best moved to Liverpool and opened the Casbah Coffee Club in the Bests' house cellar. During that time, the Beatles were famous as the Quarrymen and played some of their first concerts in that club.

On August 12, 1960, the Beatles invited Best to join them on the eve of the group's first Hamburg season of club dates. On August 16, 1962, Ringo Starr eventually replaced Best. It happened under the direction of George Harrison, Paul McCartney, and John Lennon after their first recording session at London's Abbey Road Studios.

Best worked for some commercially unsuccessful groups and eventually gave up the music industry to become a civil servant for 20 years before he started the Pete Best Band. He was married to Kathy Best for more than 50 years and now have two daughters and four grandchildren.
