He graduated from Pepperdine University in Malibu, California where he earned a bachelor's degree in communications in 1991. He became a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity in the spring of 1989.

Jordan didn't immediately start a music career. Instead, he worked for Williams Television Time, where he helped make T.V. infomercials. As an attempt to be part of the music industry, he invited his coworkers to see him perform at a showcase, where musicians Janet Jackson and Shanice Wilson were also attendees. Eventually, his career started in the mid 1990s. His major hit song was This is How We Do It. He released several other hits in the 1990s, such as Get It on Tonight and Let's Ride.

Montell Jordan is also popular as a songwriter. He produced and wrote many hit songs for music groups and artists, such as 98 Degrees, Christina Milian, Deborah Cox, Sisqo, and also Shae Jones. He also appeared in many different films and television shows, such as Fighting Temptation and Nutty Professor. Jordan is now a minister at Victory World Church. In 2011, he produced Christian album with his popular and hit song, Shake Heaven.
