David Banner was born Lavell William Crump on April 11, 1974 in Jackson, Mississippi, USA. After completing his bachelor’s degree from the Southern University, Banner went to the University of Maryland to pursue his master’s of education.

Prior to pursuing a solo career, David Banner first collaborated with Crooked Lettaz. In his debut as a solo artist, he released the album entitled Them Firewater Boyz, Vol. 1. Under Big Face Records, his debut album sold around 7000 copies only. The release of his single entitled "Like a Pimp" paved a way for him to be noticed by some major record labels.
