Tom Leykis was born on August 1, 1956 as Thomas Joseph Leykis when his parents still lived in Bronx, New York. He spent his childhood growing up with two sisters (Terry and Ann). He also has a brother, Jim. Tom's family moved a lot. At a time, they moved to Selden, Long Island where he completed his high school studies and graduated at the age of 16, from Newfield High.

Tom Leykis studied broadcasting at Fordham University but dropped out because of financial reasons. His radio career began at the age of 14 when he was once a fill-in host. In 1979, he worked as a sidekick in Mark Simone's comedy show, The Simone Phone.
