In July of the year 2012, a federal jury awarded $269.4 million damages to Celador International against Disney for breach of contract over profit-sharing for Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?
in America. Ulsterman Paul Smith runs Celador and was the managing director of the production company behind the television quiz show. Smith and his wife, Sarah King, had a 36% stake in Complete Communications, which was sold in 2006 for $129.45 million, meaning the couple picked up $46.41 million. Smith provided $8.55 million of the $10.38 million budget for the hugely successful Slumdog Millionaire, shot in Mumbai and British-produced – in Britain alone, it took more than $1.22 billion at the box office. Smith’s Celador Entertainment made a $3.79 million profit on $40.3 million sales in 2009.
