In July last year, a federal jury awarded $269.4m damages to Celador International against Disney for breach of contract over profit-sharing for Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? in America. Disney is appealing the decision. Ulsterman Paul Smith, 64, runs Celador and was the managing director of the production company behind the television quiz show. Smith and his wife, Sarah King, had a 36% stake in Complete Communications, which was sold in 2006 for £106m, meaning the couple picked up £38m. Smith provided £7m of the £8.5m budget for the hugely successful Slumdog Millionaire, shot in Mumbai and British-produced – in Britain alone, it took more than £1 billion at the box office. Smith’s Celador Entertainment made a £3.1m profit on £33m sales in 2009.
