About Leonard Cohen

Leonard Cohen born in 1934 is a Canadian poet, novelist, musician, song-writer and singer has an estimated net worth of $20 million. He was born in Montreal into a Jewish family. His father passed away when he was nine years old.

Cohen was involved with the student council in his school days and loved to study music and poetry. As a teenager, he started learning guitar and formed his own group called “Buckskin Boys”. Earlier he was into playing the acoustic guitar, but after meeting a flamenco guitar player, he switched to the classical guitar form. Cohen loved to hang out at Saint-Laurent Boulevard, where he and his friends went for fun and eating. He was the President of McGill Debating Union and published his first set of poems in the magazine CIV/n. He graduated from the McGill University with a BA degree.

He was greatly influenced by the works of WB Yeats, Henry Miller and Walt Whitman. In 1956, his first book of poetry “Let us Compare Mythologies” was published. Cohen left New York and returned to Montreal, trying his hands in many things at the same time, however not losing out on his focus which was writing. Throughout the 1960s, he preferred to keep a low profile, but continued to write poems and fiction short stories. Gradually, Cohen started publishing less number of books – the gap started increasing. In one interview in 1998, he described his writing as “like a bear stumbling into a beehive or a honey cache: I’m stumbling right into it and getting stuck, and it’s delicious and it’s horrible and I’m in it and it’s not very graceful and it’s very awkward and it’s very painful and yet there’s something inevitable about it.”

In 2011, he was awarded the prestigious Prince of Asturias Award for his contribution to literature.
