The continuing popularity of the Queen stage show, We Will Rock You, provides a steady income for Deacon, 59, who lives in Putney. He joined the group in 1970 as its bass guitarist, though he has not been involved in recent touring and recording. Ironically, the death of lead singer Freddie Mercury in 1991 gave Queen a new lease of life. The Mercury effect has not ended.

Turnover at Queen Productions, the band's main company, soared to £40.5m in 2009. A record deal with EMI ended last year and the group has now signed with Polygram outside the US market. Deacon's company, Goldfinch Productions, has paid him £11.5m over the past six years.
