Jean Michel Jarre is a French composer, music producer and performer.

Jarre is known for his passion for the electronic, ambient and New Age genres. He is also a pioneer in organizing outdoor spectacles featuring lights, laser displays, and fireworks.

He started his career when he was commissioned by choreographer Norbert Schmucki to perform a ballet, AOR at the Palais Garnier. He also contributed music for ballet, theater, advertisements and television programs.

Jarre composed the soundtrack for Les Granges Brûlées. In 1972, he wrote music for the International Festival of Magic and he released his first solo album, Deserted Palace. From 1973–74, he wrote music for Françoise Hardy and Gérard Lenorman, and he also directed Christophe's Olympia show

His first mainstream success was the 1976 album Oxygène. He recorded the album at his home. The album sold an estimated 12 million copies.

In 1979, he performed to a record-breaking audience of more than a million people at the Place de la Concorde. Then, in 1981, his first foreign tour in China, wherein he was invited by the Chinese government. He was awarded as UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador in 1993.

In 2000, Jarre released his first vocal album, Métamorphoses. It was mixed on an early version of Pro Tools, a digital audio workstation designed to record, edit and play back digital audio. Sound effects used include radio interference from mobile phones, and Macintalk, a Macintosh program used to generate lyrics on the track "Love, Love, Love".

As of 2004, Jarre had sold an estimated 80 million albums. In 2009, he was made the artistic director of the World Sky Race, and also accepted a role as Goodwill Ambassador for the International Year of Astronomy.

Jean Michel Jarre was born on August 24, 1948 in Lyon, France. He studied at Lycée Michelet. He married thrice, and divorced. He has two children from his previous marriage.
