American drummer Danny Carey is best known for his work in the Grammy Award-winning progressive metal band Tool. He has a estimated net worth of $40 million that he gained mostly as the drummer of the American rock band while contributing to the albums of various artists including Zaum, Green Jellö, Pigface, Skinny Puppy, Adrian Belew of King Crimson, Carole King, Collide, Lusk, and the Melvins.

Born Daniel Edwin Carey on May 10, 1961 in Lawrence, Kansas, his first drum experience was when he joined the school band as well as taking private lessons with the snare drum. He began to practice on a real drum set two years later. When he was a senior in high school, he joined the high school jazz band and trained under Ben Kelso for jazz drumming. Because he specifically worked with jazz music, it has greatly contributed to his signature approach on the drum set while on a rock setting. His interest in music continued while studying in college as he expanded his studies into the principles of geometry, science, and metaphysics as well as delving into Sacred Geometry and certain hidden aspects of life and the occult at the University of Missouri–Kansas City.

After college, he left for Portland, Oregon as convinced by his friend and bandmate, where he briefly played in various bands. He later moved to Los Angeles and met various artists that he has worked with until he found his way to Tool when he got to know singer Maynard James Keenan and guitarist Adam Jones.
