She was born in Berkeley, California on November 6th 1972. Her mother Elizabeth is an English teacher, and her father of Dutch origins, Jaap Romijn, is a custom furniture maker. Due her tall stature (5 feet 11 inches, 1.80 meter), she started modelling at an early age, even making it to the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue and Victoria's Secrets Catalogs. She also walked on the runway for Armani and Victoria's Secrets, along with being named Sexiest Woman Alive by many magazines, Maxim in particular.

Her claim to fame as an actress was when she took on the role of Mystique in X-Men (2000), and its sequels X2: X-Men United (2003) and X-Men: The Last Stand (2006).
