Born into a Catholic family with Mexican roots in San Diego, California in 1973, Lopez embarked upon his acting career in 1984 when he was cast in the ABC sitcom a.k.a. Pablo. However, it was 1989 when his major acting break occurred, with Lopez being given the role of A.C. Slater in NBC's Saved by the Bell. He later starred in Pacific Blue and The Bold and the Beautiful on the USA Network and CBS Daytime channels respectively.

Lopez started his presenting career in 1992 as the host of Name Your Adventure. In November 2012, he hosted The X Factor on Fox alongside Khloe Kardashian, having previously presented MTV's America's Best Dance Crew.

While the vast majority of Lopez' net worth is comprised of his television work, this is supplemented by the non-fiction books he has published, including a bestselling cookbook. He also appeared as a contestant on reality show Dancing with the Stars in 2006.
