A conspicuous aversion to hairbrushes might mean Burton, 52, and Bonham Carter, 44, are no Brad and Angelina, but they are a movie industry power couple to be reckoned with. California-born Burton, inset, was listed as the sixth highest earner in Hollywood last year by Vanity Fair magazine’s annual survey, with a pay packet of £35m. His gothic muse actress and other half Bonham Carter has been twice Oscar-nominated, most recently for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth in The King’s Speech — a role that did bag her a Bafta. She first found fame as Lucy Honeychurch in A Room with a View but her bohemian nature soon loosened the stays of typecasting. It was while dressed as a simian creature on the set of Planet of the Apes that Bonham Carter (a memorable Bellatrix Lestrange in the Harry Potter movies) met the future father of her two children.

Unconventionality has characterised their relationship ever since — the pair live happily in two interconnecting houses in north London’s Belsize Park, a stone’s throw from where Bonham Carter grew up. She is from pedigree stock: her great-grandfather was Herbert Asquith, the Liberal prime minister. Brother Edward, worth a cool £62m, runs Jupiter Fund Management, which floated in June. Burton’s Batman in 1989 and Batman Returns in 1992 grossed $683m in ticket sales worldwide. In all, his films have earned well over $3 billion. With their London property and the £3m net assets in Bonham Carter’s company, Orlando. The 2011 Sunday Times Rich List raised this artistic pair to worth £70m on the back of their film income and share of box office receipts.
