Born in 1934 the son of Ukrainian immigrants and Jewish faith, Pollack grew up in Indiana. He wanted to be a doctor but somehow after high school and his mother’s early demise he joined Meisner to get trained as an actor and director. He assisted Sanford Meisner at the Neighborhood Playhouse and went to Los Angeles in 1960 to be a dialogue trainer and writer for children. So began his tryst with Hollywood.
His directorial ventures, The Fugitive and some episodes of Alfred Hitchcock Presents made him a more visible entity and then came the success of The Slender Thread with Sidney Poitier and Anne Bancroft in 1965. His movies went on to win 48 Oscar nominations and 11 awards in all. His last few films include-The Firm, Havana, Sabrina and Eyes Wide Shut. He was happily married to Claire Griswold in 1958, who was by his side when she died in 2008.
