Dermot attended the Maury Elementary School. He played cello in city youth orchestras and also in school. He also acted in the children’s community theater. Williams High School and Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, where he was a member of the fraternity of Phi Gamma Delta.

His fame grew when he starred in the film Long Companion, where he acts as a young man with HIV when the disease was unheard off  during its early days. He is also known for his roles in the films Sunset, Staying Together, Survival Quest, Samantha, Where the Day Takes You, and Angels in the Outfield as well as the TV Movie The Last Outlaw, About Schmidt, and August: Osage County. He also played the main antagonist named Francis Gibson in NBC's Crisis.
