She also played the role of Morticia Addams in The Addams Family and its sequel, which earned her two Golden Globe nominations. She then worked with director Wes Anderson for The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, and The Darjeeling Limited. On television, her works include recurring roles on Huff, Medium, and Transparent. She won a Gracie Award when she portrayed the role of Eileen Rand on Smash.

Besides acting, Anjelica has also directed several movies which include Bastard out of Carolina and Agnes Browne, in which she also starred. Furthermore, she has also served as a voice actor where she provided a voice over for Queen Clarion in the fairies films from Disney.
