Nichelle Nichols was born Grace Dell Nichols on December 28, 1932 in Robbins, Illinois, USA. After her short-lived marriage to Foster Johnson, Nichelle Nichols married Duke Mondy in 1967. In 1972, the couple divorced. She is the mother of the actor Kyle Johnson.

As an actress, she debuted in the 1959 film Porgy and Bess where she took a cameo role.
