Kyra Sedgwick is a Golden Globe and Emmy award-winning actress with a career spanning almost four decades. She was born into a wealthy family with her father, Henry Dwight. Sedgwick is a venture capitalist and her mother, Patricia Rosenwald, a family and speech therapist. The actress's mother was from an upper-class German-Jewish family and so the actress identifies as Jewish. However, Sedgwick's parents decided to separate when she was four and then divorce when she was six. Her mother went on to marry Ben Heller, an art dealer. She is the sister of the actor Robert Sedgwick and half-sister of jazz guitarist Mike Stern. Sedgwick is also the aunt of pop singer George Nozuka and his younger singer-songwriter brother Justin Nozuka. Sedgewick has amassed her wealth from her family and as well as her work as an actress, building a sizeable fortune of $16 million.

At the age of 16, Sedgwick made her first professional acting debut on the soap opera, Another World in 1964. She went on to attended Friends Seminary, Sarah Lawrence College, and eventually transferred to the University of Southern California where she graduated with a degree in Theatre. Regardless of her family fortune, she followed her passion for television and film, because she says it gave her the ability to empathize and walk in other people's shoes. Sedgewick's commitment to her work has led to her working with Tom Cruise as Donna in Born on the Fourth of July(1989). She has appeared on shows like Miami Vice (1985), Talk to me (2000), Sesame Street (2010), and hit show, Brooklyn Nine-Nine (2014-2020). She joined Brooklyn Nine-Nine in the second season as a recurring character. She has appeared in movies like Singles (1992), Critical Care (1997), Loverboy (2005), and Villains (2019). Sedgwick is also a voice artist, her most notable work is voicing Batwoman in the 2003 blockbuster Batwoman: Mystery of the Batwoman. She has also voiced Louis Lane, in the franchise Justice League: The New Frontier (2008).

However, the actress's biggest role in her career was as Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson in the crime drama series The Closer, which ran from 2005-2012, with  109 episodes.  It is reported she earned $150 000 at the beginning of the show, $250,000 per episode by 2007,  and by the end of the show, she was earning $350,000 per episode. Sedgwick's performance in The Closer earned her a Golden Globe award in 2007 and a Primetime Emmy Award in 2010.  Her role on the show earned her over 40 nominations and 6 other awards, including a People's Choice Award for Favorite Television Drama Diva in 2009.

In her personal life Sedgwick is married to fellow actor Kevin Bacon, the pair met on the set of the television movie, Lemon Sky and wed on September 4, 1988. The actors have been married for 33 years and have two children, Travis Sedgwick Bacon and actress Sosie Ruth Bacon. In 2008 after Barack Obama's presidential win the couple appeared together in Will.i.am's video "It's a New Day". They have also appeared together in the films, Pirates, Murder in the First, The Woodsman, and Loverboy. It is reported the Hollywood couple is holding a net worth of $66 million together. However, they reportedly lost a sizeable fortune to a Ponzi scheme by Bernard L. Madoff, along with other famous celebrities like Steven Spielberg and John Malkovich.  The losses they suffered were as high as $30-40 million, however, the couple decided to stick together and let it not destroy their family.

Sedgwick currently stars in the ABC comedy, Call Your Mother, a series about an overprotective, nagging, empty nester who decides to move to Los Angeles to be with her two children. The role is definitely lighter, filled with more humor, and less dramatic than her usual roles as a strong woman. With her high cheekbones, piercing eyes, full lips, and hair with beautiful, striking blonde curls, the actress has no problem landing the film and TV roles to sustain her life as a working actress, but her solid, pensive presence onscreen has proved to be an even more useful asset than her looks, landing at least two substantial parts a year.
