Heatherton began her professional career as a child actress in 1959. She was a member of the ensemble and an understudy in the original Broadway production of The Sound of Music. She received her first sustained national exposure in the same year as a semi-regular on The Perry Como Show where she played an exuberant teenager with a perpetual crush on Perry Como. She also made recurring appearances on several variety shows such as The Dean Martin Show, The Andy Williams Show and The Ed Sullivan Show.

Joey Heatherton first appeared on television on her father’s show The Merry Mailman, a popular children’s show in New York. She also appeared in TV dramas such as The Virginian, The Doctors and the Nurses and Route 66. She had guest starring roles in Arrest and Trial and Breaking Point.
