He is best known for his work as a child and teenager in the Broadway musical Raisin, based on the Lorraine Hansberrry drama A Raisin in the Sun, and on the 1970s sitcom Good Times where he played the role of Michael Evans, the youngest member of the Evans family.
With his work in Raisin, Carter earned a Tony nomination for Best Supporting or Featured Actor (Musical). During that time, he also appeared in two Galt McDermot flop musicals: Dude, which earned him the Drama Desk Award for Most Promising Performer, and Via Galactica.
As a singer, he recorded an album in 1975 called When You’re Young and in Love, which he also performed on an episode of Soul Train. The title song, along with the track Extra, Extra, were popular in disco clubs and reached #10 and #12 in the charts, respectively. The title song of his second album The Rent Party was sang in an episode of Good Times.
