Born Gerald Lee McRaney on August 19, 1947 in Collins, Mississippi, USA, he attended the University of Mississippi. Upon graduation, he worked in the Louisiana oil fields before deciding to pursue an acting career.

McRaney became a professional actor when he worked in horror films during the late 60s and early 70s. Since then, he had consistent work on television, with co-starring, guest-starring, and supporting roles on shows such as The Waltons, Gunsmoke, Hawaii Five-O, The Six Million Dollar Man, The Rockford Files, Logan’s Run, The Dukes of Hazard, The Incredible Hulk, Magnum P.I. and Designing Women.

McRaney is considered the last guest star to meet Marshal Matt Dillon in a gunfight during the Hard Labor episode of Gunsmoke. He was also credited for his works in Roots: The Next Generations, Ike: Countdown to D-Day, One Tree Hill, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Diagnosis: Murder, A Holiday Romance, The A-Team, Fairly Legal, Red Tails, Longmire, Mike & Molly, House of Cards and Justified.
