About Edward Allen Harris

Harris was born on 28th November 1950 in Englewood, New Jersey. His father was a singer who used to sing with Fred Waring Chorus. He used to work at an art book store in Chicago as well. Ed’s mother, Margaret, was a travel agent. Harris has two brothers – one elder, Robert and the other younger, Spencer.

Harris grew up in a middle-class family. Harris’ debut film was Borderline with Charles Bronson. In 1981, he played the role of a hippy motor cycle King based on King Arthur in Knightriders. In 1983, he appeared in the film The Right Stuff where he played the role of John Glen, an astronaut. For his role in Apollo 13, he was nominated for the Best Supporting Actor in the Academy Awards.

He has nominated for the Oscars in later years as well for movies such as, The Truman Show (1999), Pollock (2001), and The Hours (2003). Harris also appeared in another 2001 movie “Enemy at the Gates”, where he portrayed a German general. In 2005, he appeared in “A History of Violence”, and in 2007, “Gone, Baby, Gone”. Harris debuted as a director in 2000 with Pollock. He has been directing plays and has been acting on and off on the stage for a long time now.

Harris is married to Amy Madigan for 21 years now. The couple got married in November 1983.
