Dilip Kumar was born Muhammad Yusuf Khan on December 11, 1922 in Peshawar, British India, which is now known as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. Since 1966, he has been married to Saira Banu.

Dilip Kumar had his acting debut with the 1944 film Jwar Bhata. However, the film went unnoticed. He rose to fame with the 1947 film Jugnu which he co-starred with Noor Jehan. The film was considered Kumar's first major box office success. Since then, he has appeared in several successful films such as Shaheed, Andaz, Jogan, Deedar, Devdas, Daag, Yahudi, and Madhumati. 

Over his six-decade career, Kumar has appeared in more than 60 films of various genres, which include drama, comical, historical, swashbuckling, and romance. He is a two-time recipient of the Filmfare Best Actor Award. He got his first Filmfare Best Actor Award for his appearance in Daag. He acquired his second Filmfare Best Actor Award with the film Devdas.
