Born and raised in Chicago, Bernie Mac is known to be a member of  The Original Kings of Comedy. The group's other members include D. L. Bernie Mac died on August 9, 2008 due to some complications in pneumonia. Prior to his death, Bernie Mac was diagnosed with sarcoidosis, a disease characterized by an abnormal collection of granulomas, a kind of chronic inflammatory cell, that form nodules in organs especially in the lymph nodes and lungs.

Bernie Mac was married to Rhonda McCullough. He has a child named Je'Niece Childress.
