Marissa Ann Mayer graduated with honors from Stanford University with a B.S. in symbolic systems and an M.S. in computer science where she specialized in artificial intelligence for both degrees. In 2009, she was granted an honoris causa doctorate degree by the Illinois Institute of Technology for her work in the field of research.

Mayer began her career at Google in 1999 as employee number 20 and the company's first female engineer. She has worked for thirteen years as an engineer, designer, product manager, and executive.
