Prior to his WWE career, Shawn Michaels began his professional wrestling career with the American Wrestling Association (AWA) and Mid-South Wrestling, which is now known as Universal Wrestling Federation. In 1987, he signed with the World Wrestling Federation (WWF).

In 1989, he established the D-Generation X (DX) together with Rick Rude, Chyna and Triple H. His loss at the WrestleMania XIV, for the WWF Championship led to his retirement. He then formed the  The Shawn Michaels Wrestling Academy and in 2002, he returned to WWF during the SummerSlam.

Considered as the first grand slam champion, Shawn Michaels won the 1995 and 1996 Royal Rumble.
