At an early age of 9, Santino Marella was trained in judo, has competed in high school wrestling and has won in the Region of Peel Secondary School Athletic Association Tournament. He started his career in 2003 and joined an Ontario independent circuit. The following year, he participated in four matches for the Battlarts in Japan.

In 2006, he signed a developmental contract with World Wrestling Entertainment after a year of training at Ohio Valley Wrestling.  A year later, Marella debuted in an episode for Raw and won the WWE Intercontinental Championship.
