Martina was born in Kosice in today’s Slovakia. Her parents were Melanie Molitorova and Karol Hingis, both of them were celebrated tennis players. Melanie was ranked 10th while her father Karol was ranked 19th among tennis players. The two separated when Martina was just six years of age. The mom and daughter re-located to Switzerland. She started playing tennis at an early age of 2 years, and entered her first tournament at the age of 4.

At the age of 12, Martina won the Grand Slam junior title at the French Open. That was in 1993. She was able to retain the title in 1994. She won the Wimbledon too. Martina made her professional debut in 1994. She was ranked #87.

Martina Hingis has certainly been among the finest tennis players ever seen. She has been included in the list of Legends of Women’s Tennis - Past, Present and Future by the Time magazine. She has also been included into the International Tennis Hall Of Fame.
