Nemanja Matic played for Kolubara in 2005. Then, he signed for Slovak club Kosice in 2007 and stayed with the team for two seasons. While with the team, he received his Slovak citizenship.
On August 18, 2009, he signed a four-year contract for Chelsea. Matic debuted to the Premier League as substitute for Florent Malouda in a match against the Wolverhampton Wanderers. After a year, he moved to Vitesse by the virtue of a one-year loan, along with his teammates Slobodan Rajković and Matej Delač.
In 2011, Matic transferred to the Portuguese club Benfica in a trade deal for David Luiz. He was hailed as Primeira Liga Player of the Year for 2012-2013 season and a runner-up for the FIFA Puskas Award in 2013. He re-joined Chelsea in January 2014 and named as one of the four midfielders in the PFA Team of the Year.
