Bruce Arena started his career when he was in high school for the soccer team of Carey High School in New York. He also participated for New York City's Cosmopolitan Soccer League's Hota S.C. for one season.

As he went through college, he played for Nassau Community College's soccer team as Arena was recognized as an All-American soccer player. Then, upon leaving Nassau he transferred to Cornell University, he became the goalkeeper for the Cornell Big Red soccer team. He led the team to the 1972 NCAA Men's Soccer Championship Final Four and earned Most Valuable Defensive Player.

After he was drafted by the New York Cosmos, Arena was released before the season. Then, he was contacted by former coach of Cornell to play for Tacoma Tides.  During that time, he was introduced to the world of coaching. He handled several soccer team such as University of Puget Sound, University of Virginia, D.C. United, United States U-23, New York Red Bulls and Los Angeles Galaxy. He was recognized as MLS Coach of the Year in 1997, 2009 and 2011.
