Vincent Jackson was a professional football player with an estimated net worth of $50 million at the time of his death. He played for the National Football League's Tampa Bay Buccaneers as the team's wide receiver. He died at just 38, in February 2021.
Vincent Jackson was born on January 14, 1983, in Fort Polk, Louisiana. His parents Terence and Sherry both served in the U.S. Army and met while at boot camp. After a series of house moves, the family settled in Colorado Springs, Colorado. After attending Widefield High School, he studied at the University of Northern Colorado, where he had a record-setting football career, as well as leading the basketball team scoreboard during his sophomore year. In 2005, he was selected by the San Diego Chargers as its second-round pick (61st overall) in the 2005 NFL Draft. From 2005 through 2011, he played for the Chargers, amassing more than 9,000 receiving yards over the next 12 seasons.
On March 13, 2012, Vincent Jackson was signed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a five-year, $55.55 million contract. Throughout his career, Jackson was selected to a Pro-bowl three times (2009, 2011, and 2012). He ranked 52nd on the Top 100 Players of 2013.
Nicknamed V-Jax, his salary as a football player reached $23.4 million for the 2012-2013 season, and he achieved a career-high 1,384 receiving yards on 72 receptions. The following seasons saw a decline in Jackson's catches and yards due to the arrivals of new rookie teammates. Despite this, his stats were still high, with Jackson surpassing 8,000 career receiving yards in week 12 of the 2014 season. Throughout his football career, it's estimated he earned around $70 million, as well as earning approximately $275,000 per year in endorsement deals.
In the latter part of Jackson's football career, he started putting things in place for his life post-football. His first venture was a restaurant on the beach in San Diego named Dirty Birds which specialized in chicken wings, then added more restaurants and franchises to his portfolio over the next few years, including Cask Social Kitchen in south Tampa. He also operated a number of Orangetheory fitness studios and returned to college at the University of South Florida, graduating in 2016 with a degree in business management.
However, his main business outside of football was real estate. His Tampa-based development company CTV Capital was founded in 2012 and provided real estate projects, construction services, insurance, and property management.
After signing with the Buccaneers, he founded the nonprofit The Jackson in Action 83 Foundation and dedicated a lot of his free time to the foundation. The organization provides emotional and educational support to the children of military parents, and Jackson himself regularly read and donated care packages to the elementary school at the MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa.
In December 2015 Jackson was placed on injured reserve, and in October 2016 he was again placed on reserve after suffering a knee injury just five weeks into the season. He announced his retirement from football in May 2018, aged 35. He went on to develop his real estate business and was part of a development group working to restore the Manhattan Casino.
Jackson was married to Lindsey VanDeweghe, a Colorado native. He proposed to Lindsey in 2011, after being inducted into the UNC Athletic Hall of Fame. She said yes and they tied the knot in July that same year. The couple had three children together: Carter, Amaya, and Dominick. The family lived in a $3.5 million mansion at the Palma Ceia Golf and Country Club, boasting a 4-car garage, a wet bar, and a guest suite.
On February 15th, 2021, Jackson was found dead by a housekeeper at Homewood Studios in Brandon, Florida. His family donated his brain to the Boston University CTE Center, as it's suspected Jackson may have been suffering from the brain disease chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) from a number of past concussions.
