Terrance Knighton attended Windsor High School and joined its football team. He earned the All-State and Hartford Courant All-Area honors in 2003. In 2004, he played for the Milford Academy, and made 70 tackles and six packs.

In college, he played for the Temple Owls. Knighton became a regular starter as a sophomore, did 57 tackles, and three sacks during the entire season. He received First Team All-MAC honors.
