Ryan was born on December 13, 1962 in Ardmore, Oklahoma, USA. He is the son of Buddy Ryan, who previously served as head coach of Arizona Cardinals and Philadelphia Eagles. He is the twin brother of Bob Ryan, who currently serves as New Orleans Saints' defensive coordinator. He is currently married to his wife Michelle with whom he has two sons, Peyton and Seth Ryan.
After graduating from Southwestern Oklahoma State University, Rex Ryan worked as a coach for Eastern Kentucky, New Mexico Highlands, Morehead State University, Arizona Cardinals, Cincinnati, Oklahoma, and Kansas State University.
From 1999 through 2008, he worked as the coach for Baltimore Ravens. He was also the team's defensive line coach from 1999 through 2004. From 2005 through 2008, he worked as the defensive coordinator of the franchise. In 2008, he became the team's assistant head coach. Since 2009, he has been serving as head coach of the New York Jets.
