Matt Kalil started his career with the Servite High School and played for the Friars football team. In 2008, he joined the West squad for the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

Eventually, he started playing for the University of Southern California's Trojans where he was redshirted during his first year. During his stint with the team, he was named to All-American several times, and one of the semifinalist for the 2011 Lombardi Award.
