After attending the University of Michigan, Howard was selected by the Washington Redskins as its 4th overall pick in the first round of the 1992 NFL Draft. He played with the Redskins until the end of the 1994 season. For the 1995 and 1996 seasons, Desmond Howard played for the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Green Bay Packers, respectively. He then played for two seasons with the Oakland Traders from 1997 through 1998. He returned to Packers during the 1999 season and prior to his retirement in 2002, he spent his last three professional years with the Detroit Lions.

Desmond Howard is a Heisman trophy and UPI Player of the Year awardee. Considered as a Michigan Football Legend, Howard was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2011.
