Ty Lawson started his career when he played for the Bishop McNamara from 2003 to 2004. But he transferred to Oak Hill Academy's basketball team and was a first-team USA Today's All-American.
During the 2006-07 season, he started playing for the University of North Carolina Tar Heels. He was named ACC Best Player of the Year in 2009. Lawson was voted as All-ACC first team.
He was chosen by the Denver Nuggets during the NBA Draft of 2009, after the Minnesota Timberwolves drafted two point guards. During the lockout from the NBA in 2011, he signed a one-year contract with the Lithuania's BC Žalgiris.
