Derek Harper is a former American professional basketball player with an estimated net worth of $13 million.

Derek Harper started his basketball career at the North Shore High School. He was a McDonald's All-American during his senior year. In college, he played for three seasons with the University of Illinois' Fighting Illini basketball team. He was named First-Team All-Big Ten, and Second-Team All-American in 1983.

He entered the NBA Draft in 1983 and was selected in the first round, 11th overall pick, by Dallas Mavericks. After 10 years with the team, Harper was traded to the New York Knicks in 1994.

He returned to the Mavericks after two seasons with the Knicks. Harper played one season for the Orlando Magic and the Los Angeles Lakers. When he was traded by the Lakers to Detroit Pistons, instead of reporting to the team, he decided to end his 16-year NBA career.
