In 2003, Ben Howland signed as the head coach of the men's basketball coach of the University of Los Angeles California.  Five years later, he signed an extension contract which ran until 2015. He has also worked as an assistant coach to the men's basketball team of Gonzaga University, the Gonzaga Bulldogs, and University of California Santa Barbara.

From 1994 to 1999, he served as the head coach of the Northern Arizona University and in 1999 to 2003, he held the position as head coach of the Pittsburgh Panthers. From 2003 through 2013, he has been working as the head coach of the UCLA Ruins. Two years later, he became the head coach for the Mississippi State Bulldogs.
