Mark Hunt's career started when he met Sam Marsters, a bouncer working in an Auckland nightclub invited him for a formal training in a gym. He won a Muay Thai kickboxing match via knockout. After a year, he moved to Sydney, Australia and trained by Alex Tui.
He joined the K-1 Oceania and won the title several times during his stint. Hunt eventually shifted to mixed martial arts and became one of the fighters for PRIDE Fighting Championship in Japan.
Hunt transferred to the Ultimate Fighting Championship as part of its acquisition of Pride Fighting Championship in 2010. He fought several fighters such as Roy Nelson, Chieck Kongo, and Ben Rothwell, among others.
