Jim Miller learned taekwondo at the age of eight. He competed in wrestling at Sparta High School and Virginia Tech. His professional fight started in 2005 when he faced Eddie Fyvie at Reality Fighting 10.

He also appeared at the Cage Fury Fighting Championship, and was able to defeat Anthony Morrison and Al Buck.  Miller and his brother, Dan signed with the Ultimate Fighting Championship in 2008.
