Thomas Vanek started off his career when he joined the United States Hockey League's Sioux Falls Stampede junior hockey team. After his stint with the team, he was selected to play for University of Minnesota Golden Gophers.

He was named MVP during the Frozen Four tournament. Before Vanek became into a professional hockey player, he was a member of the Austrian national team in 2004. He spent the 2004-2005 season with the Rochester Americans.

After a season at AHL, Vanek signed a three-year contract with Buffalo Sabres in 2004. He earned the NHL Plus/Minus Award during the 2006-2006 season.
