Steve Yzerman started his career with his hometown's hockey team, Nepean Raiders Junior A. After playing one season for the team, he was drafted by the Ontario Hockey League's Peterborough Petes from 1981 to 1983.

He entered the NHL Entry Draft in 1983 and was selected by the Detroit Red Wings as the fourth overall pick. During his rookie season, he tallied 39 goals and 87 points for the team. He placed second in the Calder Memorial Trophy and became the first 18-year old player to make it to the roster for an All-Star Game.

During Yzerman's stint for the Red Wings, he holds the NHL record as the longest serving captain from a team. He received numerous accolades such as Lester B. Pearson Award in 1989, Conn Smythe Trophy in 1998, and Frank J. Selke Trophy in 2000. He announced his retirement on July 3, 2006.

After his ice hockey career, he became the Red Wings' vice president and alternate governor on September 25, 2006. Meanwhile, Hockey Canada named him as the general manager of Team Canada during the 2007 IIHF World Championship which was held in Moscow, Russia. In 2010, he was named Tampa Bay Lightning's general manager and vice president.
