Luongo is a recipient of William M. Jennings Trophy and in the past, he was a two-time NHL Second All-Star. However, before his NHL career started, he played for Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). After his second season with (QMJHL), he was selected by New York Islanders as its 4th overall pick in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft. In June 2000, he was traded to Florida Panthers together with Olli Jokinen in exchange for Oleg Kvasha and Mark Parrish. He was surprised by such deal but he was glad to be praised by the general manager of Florida Panthers. In fact, he was referred to as "the franchise guy."
Prior to his third season with the Panthers, Luongo signed a four-year extension contract with the franchise. However, before the 2006-07 season has started, Luongo was traded to Vancouver Canucks together with a future sixth round pick and Lukáš Krajíček, in exchange for Bryan Allen, Alex Auld and Todd Bertuzzi. Shortly, Canucks offered him a four-year $27 million worth of contract. In September 2010, the management of Canucks officially announced that Luongo agreed to sign a 12-year contract extension which was reported to be worth $64 million with an annual salary cap hit of $5.33 million. The contract stipulates that he will receive $10 million in 2010–11, and from 2011-2012 season through 2017-2018 season, he is to receive an annual salary of around $6.7 million. In the next two seasons, he is expected to receive $3.3 million and $1.6 subsequently. And on his final two years with Canucks he will receive $1 million annually.
