Phil Kessel started his career when he joined the AAA Madison Capitols from 2001-2003. During the 2003-2004 season, he played for the United States National Team Development Program U17 and U18 squad.

He received a sports scholarship at University of Minnesota, and played with the Golden Gophers for one season. Kessel was named as the WCHA Rookie of the Year. In 2006, he was chosen as the 5th overall pick by the Boston Bruins during the NFL Draft. He was diagnosed with testicular cancer while with the team, and received the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy.
