With his inclusion by the Colorado Avalanche during the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, he was signed to an Amateur Try Out contract with the team's affiliate, Lake Erie Monsters during the 2009-2010 season. But Shattenkirk was recalled by the Avalanche and made his NHL debut against the Vancouver Canucks.
In 2011, he was traded to the St. Louis Blues. He spent his 2012-2013 NHL lockout with SM-Iliga's TPS. Shattenkirk made 2 goals and 6 points for 12 games with the team. Upon his return to the Blues, he extended his stay for 4-year contract.
