Jay Bouwmeester started playing hockey when he joined Edmonton South Side Athletic Club's bantam and midget hockey. The team won the Alberta midget championship in 1997-1998 season. Then, he was selected by the Western Hockey League's Medicine Hat Tigers during the 1998 Bantam Draft.

In the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, he was selected by the Florida Panthers as the 3rd overall pick. Bouwmeester appeared 82 games with the team and named as 2003 NHL All-Rookie Team on defence.

After seven years with the Panthers, the team decided to trade Bouwmeester to the Calgary Flames. With his struggles playing for the Flames, he agreed to waive his no-trade clause. Then, he was transferred to the St. Louis Blues during the 2013-2014 season.
