Erik Karlsson started his career in 2008 when he played for the Elitserien's Frolunda HC. The team eventually won the Anton Cup when they clinched the Swedish Junior Ice Hockey Championship title against Brynas IF.  He was ranked fourth among European hockey players by the NHL Central Scouting Service.
