David Backes started playing ice hockey with the Spring Lake Park High School's hockey team. He was one of the finalists for 2002 Minnesota Mr. Hockey award. And also, he was named as All-Conference, All-Metro, and All-State during his senior year with the school.

He spent two years with the United States Hockey League's Lincoln Stars. Then, Backes played spent three seasons with the Minnesota State University's college hockey. He was named to the Men's RBK Division I West All-America Second Team, and ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America First-Team for 2005-2006 season.

In 2003, Backes was selected by the St. Louis Blues as a second round, 62nd overall pick for the NHL Entry Draft. While with the team, he was the 20th captain for the Blues, when he replaced Eric Brewer who had been traded to Tampa Bay Lightning.
