Dan Girardi started his sporting career when he joined the Welland Tigers. He was a member of Ontario Minor Hockey Association's Minor Atom AAA Championship.
When he became a member of London Knights, Girardi led the team in achieving the 2005 OHL Championship, and 2005 Memorial Cup. He didn't go through rigid draft selection on NHL, but he signed as a free agent with a two-way contract with the Hartford Wolf Pack for the American Hockey League and East Coast Hockey League's Charlotte Checkers.
Girardi signed a deal with the New York Rangers in 2006. While with the team, he was named as the interim alternate captain for three consecutive season.
